iGrain India - The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), under the Union Textiles Ministry, has successfully procured over 31 lakh bales of cotton (each bale weighing 170 kg) so far in the current marketing season (2024-25).
This represents about one-third of the total cotton arrivals in the mandis, indicating significant support to farmers.
As of December 14, 2024, cotton procurement has been most concentrated in Telangana (19.94 lakh bales) and Maharashtra (5.42 lakh bales), with additional purchases in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and other states.
The government increased the minimum support price (MSP) for cotton this season: Rs 7,121 per quintal for medium fiber and Rs 7,521 per quintal for long fiber, marking a 7% rise from the previous season.
CCI's procurement efforts are expected to surpass last season's total of 33 lakh bales, with the current estimate for the 2024-25 season ranging between 50 to 70 lakh bales.
