iGrain India - Lentil prices fall due to weak buying

Lentil prices experienced a decline this week, driven by weak buying and profit booking at higher price levels. Increased sales, coupled with the issuance of a sale tender by the National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF), put additional pressure on prices. Additionally, Canada’s export of 5,94,514 tonnes of peas and lentils to India during the first three months of the 2024-25 marketing year marked a significant increase compared to last year. Despite this, lentil sowing has dropped by 4% to 17.06 lakh hectares, down from 17.76 lakh hectares last year.

  • Delhi: Prices fell by Rs. 50/75 per quintal due to sluggish buying from dal millers. The weekend prices were:

    • Choti Kota: Rs. 6525
    • Bundi: Rs. 6825
    • Uttar Pradesh: Rs. 6900
    • Desi Badi: Rs. 6625
  • Madhya Pradesh: Due to weak buying and increased selling, prices fell by Rs. 50/100 per quintal. Weekend prices stood at:

    • Ashoknagar: Rs. 5900/6000
    • Sagar: Rs. 5600/6000
    • Damoh: Rs. 5700/6400
    • Indore: Rs. 6000
    • Katni: Rs. 6575
  • Uttar Pradesh: Lentil prices saw a decline of Rs. 50/100 per quintal due to sluggish demand, with prices at the weekend at:

    • Bareilly (small): Rs. 7000
    • Thick: Rs. 6625/6650
    • Kanpur: Rs. 6500
    • Lalitpur (thick): Rs. 5700/5850, (small): Rs. 6300/6350
  • Bihar: The prices of Bihar masoor dropped by Rs. 50 per quintal due to weak demand, with prices standing at:

    • Barh: Rs. 6600
    • Khusrupur: Rs. 6550
    • Mokama: Rs. 6600
  • Raipur: Masoor prices in Raipur also fell by Rs. 50 per quintal, closing at Rs. 6200 per quintal at the weekend.

Masoor Dal:The fall in masoor prices and weak demand impacted masoor dal prices, leading to a reduction of Rs. 50/75 per quintal. The prices at the weekend were:

  • Indore: Rs. 7400
  • Barh: Rs. 7500/7800
  • Khusrupur: Rs. 7400/7700
In conclusion, lentil prices were under pressure this week due to weak demand, increased sales by importers, and a significant rise in Canada’s exports to India. The decline in sowing areas in India also contributed to the weak sentiment in the market.
