A group of World Trade Organization (WTO) countries including Brazil, Canada and the European Union have urged India to timely submit its notifications on sugar subsidies to the WTO. When this matter came up for discussion before the Agriculture Committee of WTO in Geneva on 23-24 May, many countries tried to corner India on this issue.
It is noteworthy that like India, Brazil and the European Union are major producers and exporters of sugar.
He says that the special support and encouragement provided by the government to the sugar sector in India impacts global trade. Apart from Brazil and Canada, this group also includes Costa Rica, Paraguay, New Zealand, European Union and Guatemala.
The Indian representative, while replying to other countries in this discussion, said that in India, sugarcane is not purchased from farmers by the central government or the provincial governments.
In the year 2022, India had appealed against a WTO ruling stating that the government's support policies for the sugar and sugarcane sector in India are not in accordance with the rules of global sugar trade.
