iGrain India - Sao Paulo. Sugar production is increasing rapidly in the central southern region, the most important sugarcane producing region of the Latin American country Brazil.
According to the latest data from the apex industry organization UNICA, sugar production in the central southern region during the first fortnight of May 2024 increased by 0.97 percent compared to last year to reach 25.70 lakh tonnes.
With this, the total sugar production there jumped to 51.35 lakh tonnes till mid-May in the current marketing season, which was 25.75 percent more than the production of the same period last year.
The crushing quantity of sugarcane in the first half of May also increased by 0.43 percent to 447.50 lakh tonnes. Total crushing of sugarcane jumped from 798.49 lakh tonnes in 2023-24 season to 954.16 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 and sugar production increased from 40.84 lakh tonnes to 51.35 lakh tonnes.
The average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane improved slightly from 11.83 percent to 11.85 percent.
It is noteworthy that Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of sugar in the world. About 90 percent of the sugar is produced in the Central South region and it is also exported from there.
The remaining 10 percent of sugar is produced in the northern and northeastern states, which is used to meet domestic demand and need.
Sao Paulo province is located in the Central South region where 60 percent of sugar is produced. Due to increasing production in Brazil, the global market price of sugar has started coming under pressure.
This time the weather conditions there have remained largely favorable. Sugar production in Brazil had increased to a new record level in the 2023-24 season.
