iGrain India - New Delhi . The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has estimated the global production of sugar to remain at a high level of 1860 lakh tonnes during the current year (2024-25), saying that although the production in Brazil may decrease slightly, it will increase in South-East Asia. The better production will compensate for this.
According to a report released by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), sugar production in Thailand is expected to increase by 16 percent this year, while production in China and India may also increase slightly.
On the other hand, sugar production from Brazil is likely to decrease by 15 lakh tonnes even though it is the largest producer and exporter of sugar in the world. India ranks second in the production of sugar.
According to the report, although there will be some increase in global consumption of sugar, it will lag behind production and thus surplus stocks are likely to remain in the global sugar market. The pace of growth in the global economy is likely to remain slow. This will limit the increase in consumption.
There will be some decline in sugar production due to the loss of sugarcane crop due to hot and dry weather in Brazil, but it may still prove to be the second largest production ever.
There is no possibility of any significant change in the export of sugar from Brazil and its use in Brazil. Global production of sugar in the 2023-24 season was estimated at about 1835 lakh tonnes, in which Brazil's contribution was 455 lakh tonnes, India's 340 lakh tonnes and the European Union's contribution was 150 lakh tonnes.
