iGrain India - New Delhi . The year 2023-24 in India was not very good in terms of agricultural area and pulses production. There was a decline in the production of all three major pulses – Arhar (Tuvar), Urad and Moong in the Kharif season. After this, the production of the most important pulse of Rabi season – gram – also decreased. As a result, there was a significant rise in the prices of pulses.
However, with the aim of increasing the supply and availability of pulses in the domestic division and curbing the rise in prices, the government has extended the deadline for duty-free import of tur,
urad and lentils till March 31, 2025, but yellow peas and desi gram The period of duty free import has been extended till 31 October 2024 only. Moong Ayat has been banned for two years.
Due to decline in production, lack of required quantity of imports from abroad and high level of demand and consumption, the prices of special tur, urad and gram and its pulses increased.
The retail price of chana dal has increased to Rs 85 per kg and the price of tuvar dal has increased to Rs 160 per kg.
In the same period last year, this retail price was recorded at Rs 70 per kg and Rs 120 per kg respectively.
This year, the south-west monsoon conditions are likely to be favorable while the market prices are moving high and fast. As a result, there are chances of a good increase in sowing diseases and production of Kharif pulses crops.
With this, the situation of its supply and availability in the domestic division can remain easy. But the arrival of new goods of Kharif season tur and moong will start in October-November and the arrival of tur in December-January. For this, the government has already announced duty free import till 31 March 2025.
As far as Rabi season pulses - gram, lentils and peas are concerned, sowing of new domestic crops will be done in October-November and preparation for harvesting will be done in March-April next year. Currently,
its duty free import has been approved till October 2024 so that there is no dilemma among the farmers regarding its sowing in the upcoming Rabi season.
But the stock is so low that it seems difficult to bring down the prices much. New goods of gram will arrive in Australia in October-November when by then the period of duty free import will end.
