On one hand, the pace of sowing of winter crops has increased due to the good rains in the major grain producing areas of Australia in the recent days, while on the other hand, the expectation of better production is also putting pressure on the prices. The prices of various crops have softened by 3-5 dollars per tonne, but still it is slightly higher than the normal level.
In Western Australia, more than 10 mm of rain is causing good germination of seeds, but in some other areas more rain is needed for better germination.
So far, there has been light rain in the province of South Australia and this rain has also been limited to only a few areas. But now, with rain in South Australia as well as Victoria province, crops are expected to get relief.
The weather is quite dry in the southern slope area of New South Wales province, but there is a possibility of good rain there soon, which is also very much needed.
In Australia, about 90 percent of the sowing of winter crops has been completed, but farmers may need to sow again in some parts of the paddock area as there is no or negligible germination of seeds due to dry weather.
At present, wheat, barley, sorghum and canola are being sown in Australia, while sowing of pulses crops - gram, lentil and peas etc. has either been completed or has reached the final stage.
Sowing is being hampered due to drought in some areas. South Australia and Victoria have received less rain than expected, while the rain situation in the southern part of New South Wales province is also not encouraging.
