iGrain India - Kochi. The latest data of the Spices Board shows that there was a mixed trend in the export of major spices from India during 2023-24 as compared to the financial year 2022-23. While the export of some spices increased, the shipment of some other spices decreased.
The spices whose export increased include red pepper, coriander, celery and nutmeg mace. On the other hand, export of spices like black pepper, small and big (green and black) cardamom, turmeric, cumin and fenugreek and tamarind declined.
According to the data of the board, during 2023-24, as compared to the previous financial year, the export of red pepper jumped by 77 thousand tonnes from 5.24 lakh tonnes to 6.01 lakh tonnes. China, Bangladesh, Thailand and America were its major buyers.
Similarly, the export of coriander almost doubled from 54,481 tons (54,143 tons) to 1,08,624 tons. Export of celery increased by 1351 tons from 5248 tons to 6599 tons and export of nutmeg and mace increased by 1696 tons from 3447 tons to 5143 tons.
On the other hand, during the same period, export of black pepper decreased from 18,026 tons to 17,890 tons, small cardamom fell from 7353 tons to 6168 tons and big cardamom slipped from 1883 tons to 1281 tons.
Similarly, during 2022-24, compared to 2022-23, the export of turmeric fell by about 8 thousand tons from 1,70,094 tons to 1,62,019 tons and the export of cumin fell from 1,86,509 tons to 1,65,269 tons.
The export of fenugreek also fell from 35055 tons to 30,855 tons and the export of tamarind fell by 6189 tons from 33,317 tons to 27,128 tons. The production of cumin had decreased while the price had become very high.
