iGrain India - Mumbai. Heavy imports of tur from Myanmar and various African countries are continuing in India, indicating improvement in its supply and availability situation in the domestic sector and stability in prices.
According to rough estimates, during September 2024, the country imported 2,31,503 tonnes of tur, including the highest 97,240 tonnes from Mozambique, 52,152 tonnes from Tanzania, 31,175 tonnes from Myanmar, 20,225 tonnes from Kenya, 17 thousand tonnes from Malawi, 13,111 tonnes from Sudan, 423 tonnes from Nigeria and 175 tonnes from Uganda.
Turvar is imported mainly at ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Chennai, Mumbai, Mundra and Tuticorin.
During the month of September, the highest consignment of 1,51,717 tonnes of tur is expected to arrive at JNPT while 43,373 tonnes were imported at Chennai port, 33,060 tonnes at Mumbai port, 2933 tonnes at Mundra and 420 tonnes at Tuticorin port.
The arrival of new tur crop has already started in African countries and the pace of its export shipment from there has also increased.
Here in India, tur has been sown well and preparation for harvesting of the crop will start from December-January.
